For the last several
years, I have been
talking about how
horrible it is that
we are medicating,
literally, millions
of children with
Ritalin and other
drugs for
hyperactivity
instead of looking
at diet, lifestyle,
parenting, etc.
Now, we can add to
this disaster
millions of children
taking psychiatric
drugs. A recent
study, published in
the Archives of
Pediatrics and
Adolescent Medicine,
determined that 6%
of all |

children are
taking drugs such as
Prozac. The authors
of the study state
the factors they
believe are
responsible for the
increase:
Cost saving
techniques by
insurance companies.
Psychotherapy is
much more expensive
than prescribing
drugs to solve a
problem.
Marketing by the
pharmaceutical
companies – we all
know how pervasive
that has become.
Increased demands by
parents and doctors.
David Fassler, a
psychiatrist in
Vermont, said that
parents should push
more for a complete
evaluation of
children who display
psychiatric
symptoms. This
evaluation should
include a review of
the child’s
developmental
history, |
