More Kids Medicated
By Dr. Pam Popper
For the last several years, I have been talking about how horrible it is that we are medicating, literally, millions of children with Ritalin and other drugs for hyperactivity instead of looking at diet, lifestyle, parenting, etc.

Now, we can add to this disaster millions of children taking psychiatric drugs. A recent study, published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, determined that 6% of all

children are taking drugs such as Prozac. The authors of the study state the factors they believe are responsible for the increase:

Cost saving techniques by insurance companies. Psychotherapy is much more expensive than prescribing drugs to solve a problem.
Marketing by the pharmaceutical companies – we all know how pervasive that has become.
Increased demands by parents and doctors. David Fassler, a psychiatrist in Vermont, said that parents should push more for a complete evaluation of children who display psychiatric symptoms. This evaluation should include a review of the child’s developmental history,

school records, analysis of how the child functions at school and in the family, and talks involving both the child and his or her family. He goes on to say “The reality of contemporary pediatric practice makes it difficult to devote the time necessary to do a full and comprehensive evaluation.”

Okay, so I guess we just medicate these kids and wait until they grow up and then…?

The lead author of the study, Jane Zito, states “If we are using drugs to control behavior, that doesn’t change the underlying problem if someone doesn’t know how to get along with their peers.”
What do we do about this? Continue to do what we are doing. Continue to educate people that the reason children are hyperactive, or depressed is 95% of the time they are malnourished, poorly parented, in inappropriate school settings, they watch too much television, they do not exercise… in other words, their lifestyles are terrible. This will end when enough parents start dealing with the issue rather than allowing their kids to be medicated.

We hope these simple steps toward a healthier lifestyle assist you in winning the fight against childhood obesity. If you have any questions you may email us at info@youngslimkids.org. We are here to help you in the fight to save our children.
