War on Obesity in Children
By Dr. Pam Popper
The National Academy of Sciences issued a statement on September 30, 2004 stating that the U.S. must launch a campaign enlisting every aspect of society to reduce the amount of junk food children are eating and to get them to exercise more. This campaign, according to the NAS, must involve parents, schools, food companies, and local, state and federal governments.

Jeffrey Kaplan of Emory University, the Chairman of the

19-member panel convened by the NAS, stated that, “If we are not willing to make some fundamental shifts in our attitudes and actions, obesity’s toll on our nation’s health and well-being will only worsen.”

Among the recommendations made:

● Form a federal task force to address childhood obesity.
● Develop new standards for all foods and beverages sold in schools.
● Convene a national conference to draft guidelines to curb advertising and marketing of junk food to children, and empower the Federal Trade Commission to enforce them.
● Parents should make sure

their children eat better, exercise more, watch less television and play fewer video games.

This is encouraging, in that it indicates that there is some understanding of the severity of the problem, as well as good and practical solutions for fixing it at the root, which is changing the diet and lifestyle patterns that are causing the problem.

Senator Edward Kennedy has stated that he intends to introduce a bill that would require implementation of the committee’s recommendations, and actually go further in some areas. His bill would ban soft drinks and vending machines selling unhealthy foods from any school receiving federal funds.

In a related move last year, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs has banned candy and soft drinks from Texas schools, and has given the planners of school lunch menus one year to stop selling French Fries, which will be
forbidden this year. Combs is allowing children to bring birthday treats to school, and parents to have bake sales. But, the bake sale goodies have to stay wrapped up until the end of the school day. Called a “Food Nazi” by some of her critics, she responds that she prefers the term “Czarina” and does not apologize for her actions.

The momentum has clearly begun to improve the health of our children and to get rid of junk food in schools.

We hope these simple steps toward a healthier lifestyle assist you in winning the fight against childhood obesity. If you have any questions you may email us at info@youngslimkids.org. We are here to help you in the fight to save our children.
