The National Academy
of Sciences issued a
statement on
September 30, 2004
stating that the
U.S. must launch a
campaign enlisting
every aspect of
society to reduce
the amount of junk
food children are
eating and to get
them to exercise
more. This campaign,
according to the
NAS, must involve
parents, schools,
food companies, and
local, state and
federal governments.

19-member
panel convened by
the NAS, stated
that, “If we are not
willing to make some
fundamental shifts
in our attitudes and
actions, obesity’s
toll on our nation’s
health and
well-being will only
worsen.”
Among the
recommendations
made:
● Form a federal
task force to
address childhood
obesity.
● Develop new
standards for all
foods and beverages
sold in schools.
● Convene a national
conference to draft
guidelines to curb
advertising and
marketing of junk
food to children,
and empower the
Federal Trade
Commission to
enforce them.
● Parents should
